Healthy eating on a budget – Diet Solution By Isabel

Do you believe that it is impossible to lose weight while sticking to a budget?  Many people believe this to be true but it’s not!  You can put together a diet solution plan that will allow you to stay on a budget and still fix healthy foods.

People that are shopping on a budget tend to buy the cheapest things that they can find. Many times those foods are terrible in the nutrition and calorie departments.  But you don’t have to do this!  There are ways to stay on a budget and buy healthy food for you and your family.

First off, the best way to add money to your grocery budget it to stop eating out.  Some of the meals you eat out may be quick and cheap but they are not good for you.  You could also have healthier food choices that are inexpensive just by eating at home.  There are websites dedicated to giving you quick, healthy and inexpensive meals.  You don’t have to be an expert chef either.  You just have to get creative and look for new recipes.  Isabel has some great recipes that are a perfect diet solution and budget fix.

So, instead of eating out, pack a brown bag lunch to work.  Make time on the weekends or your off days to make meal plans ahead of time and fix extra so that you have healthy left-overs that you can take for lunch.  The portions you fix will be smaller than those you get eating out and it’s an easy way to cut calories.  You can plan to eat left-overs for dinner as well.  I do this all the time and it really saves money and time.

Get the Sunday paper if you don’t already and flip through the ads for the grocery stores in your areas.  Make a list of the sale items at each store and look for coupons to go with the sales.  Some places even offer double coupon days. You can even find manufacturer coupons online which will really ad up.  All of this takes time and effort but the savings will amaze you.  I try to only buy items on sale whenever possible and I stock up so that I have enough to last me until the next sale.

It can be hard, but try to cut out the “junk food” or at least severely limit it because they should only be eaten in moderation even with a diet free solution.  Chips, pre-packaged snacks and sodas are all expensive and many of them are not healthy.  I know that everyone craves these types of things but you can save money and lose weight at the same time.

Comfort Foods – Parent’s Beware!

Caution: Be careful what you feed your children, you are developing life long habits.
All in all my parents did a great job teaching us to eat. Both my sister and I love vegetables, love to cook, are thoughtful eaters and make generally good decisions about what is healthy and what is junk. That being said, we have a deep soft spot for pasta. My sister like spaghetti and red sauce as a hang over breakfast, and when I am feeling sick or low I want macaroni and cheese.
The thing is, I dont just want any mac and cheese (though most mac and cheese will do) – I want velveeta mac and cheese! I want it gooey and melty and salty. I want it to have potato chips and frozen peas in it. And I want it to come from my dad’s kitchen :)
Now that I’m an adult and have fledged out of my dad’s kitchen and into my own as a cook I realize that velveeta is pretty much disgusting. I would never have it in my house if not for mac and cheese, and would never use it in any other recipe. I understand that it is an perversion of a healthy food, a toxic gelatinous blob of pasteurized (blech) processed (double blech) cheese product (product? Not just cheese, a cheese product). But I will melt for a serving of my dad’s macaroni and cheese :)
The moral of the story is this: be careful what you feed your kids. I’ve not yet been a parent of a young child but I believe that it is exhausting and challenging beyond measure. But I beg you, for all the future foodies who wish they could just say no to velveeta, try hard to make the comfort foods you feed your kids good ones! Either that or just be willing to make those foods for your kids pretty much forever ;)

When we talk about nutrition we are talking about the types of foods we humans need to eat in order to maintain our bodies in a healthy state. While the USDA has developed ways to determine our general daily nutritional needs, our individual eating habits also have an impact on our health. The ability of the body to maintain its health in any conditions other than the ideal ones is directly related to the nutrition it receives every day. A health class in school is taught as a science. Such classes address issues such as personal hygiene, disease, and other health matters as they apply to the general public. There is no individual attention give to methods for achieving optimal health levels through our eating habits. It is ironic that the most important and basic thing we can do to influence out health is essentially ignored: the way we eat and what we eat.


Experts recommend combining the fields of nutrition and physical activity to develop an approach that can be offered to everyone who enters the school system. A program such as this would give each individual the personal knowledge to meet his or her bodys unique caloric and nutritional needs. Then they could complete their education by attaining the mental competencies expected.


Nutrition represents an important concept that should be given more attention in the educational system. Our ability to recognize nutritional requirements and to find the foods that meet those requirements is a critical part of good health. We need to learn the difference between healthy eating and unhealthy eating habits if we want to live long and healthy lives. We need to incorporate good nutrition into our lifestyles.


Bad nutrition choices currently receive more advertising money than healthy alternatives. This does not mean that it is easier or more convenient to follow a bad nutrition path. It just means that habits should change. Research has shown that it takes about two weeks to move from conscious action to unconscious thought. This is not a long time to spend altering patterns that could affect us for the rest of our lives. It is also not a long time to spend in order to achieve the reward that comes from setting a good example to your children and others.

Grain, Beans and Starchy Vegetables – 6 or more servings per day

Choose whole-grain and whole-wheat breads and flours over the white variety for baking and eating. Beans are a great source of fiber as well as low in sugar. Pretzels and low-fat crackers are perfect choices for snacking and if they’re the lower-salt varieties, even better.

Fruit – 2 to 4 servings daily

Citrus fruits are the best for diabetics. Eat whole fruits in their natural state over the canned assortments because aside from having less sugar, they also contain more fiber. If choosing the canned, frozen or juice variety, always pick those that do not contain added sweeteners or syrups.

Vegetables – 3 to 5 servings a day

Dark green and deep yellow vegetables are the best way to go. Eat freshly prepared vegetables whenever possible. If choosing the prepared variety, pick those are made without the addition of sauces and/or salt.

Milk and Dairy – 2 to 3 serving every day

Drink low or non-fat milk. Choose only low-fat yogurt made with artificial sweeteners.

Meat, Poultry, Fish – 2 to 3 servings daily

Always choose leaner cuts of red meat and trim all fat before preparing. Consume more pork, fish and chicken – remove the skin before cooking. Bake, broil, grill or roast instead of frying.

Fat – limit fat intake, specifically trans and saturated.

M just slathers BBQ sauce on it; whiLe I like a variety of goodness.

Here ya go! Try this nyummyness out!!

* 3 T light mayonnaise
* 2 tsp fresh lime juice
* 2 T finely grated parmesan cheese
* 1/2 tsp chili powder OR use the choLuLa or tabasco
* 1/4 tsp ground red or bLack pepper or smoked paprika
* 1/4 tsp ground cumin
* salt to taste
* 4 ears corn, shucked

1] Prepare grill or steamer.
2] Combine mayo, lime juice, & liquid hot sauce (if using) in a small bowl.
3] In another bowL, combine cheese and seasonings.
4] Place corn on grill rack that has been sprayed with cooking spray OR on the steamer.
5] Grill corn 12 mins/tiL tender, turning frequently OR steam for 20mins/tiL u can smell that sweetness.

One does not negate the others. Or, you can’t eat a bag of chips and then drown in water supposedly to detoxify. It does not work this way.

Third, substitution really works, and if you combine it with the right mental attitude, you will enjoy a healthier life. This means instead of eating a plateful of meaty spaghetti with meatballs, substitute instead for vegetables. Granted, it does not sound too appetizing, there are ways to make veggies taste extremely good with pasta. You just need to find the right recipes for good nutrition and healthy eating .

Pregnant women also need to take close tabs on their serving portions, because they may be eating more than what they think.   

Daily Food Serving Guidelines To Follow

Women should be careful of what they eat, and how they eat during pregnancy. They need to remember that fatty foods like chips, cookies, doughnuts and sweets like sodas and candy do not give their baby the right amount of nutrition they actually need. Here is some interesting food serving guidelines to consider.  

- Pregnant women should consume at least six ounces of grains per day. An ounce of grains is equivalent to 1 cup ready-to-eat cereal, 1 small pancake, 1 slice bread and 1 small tortilla.

- 2 ½ cup serving of vegetables. A cup of vegetables is equivalent to 1 cup vegetable juice, 1 cup raw or cooked vegetables and 1 medium-baked potato.  

-  1 ½ cup of fruits. A daily serving of 1 ½ cup of fruits is equivalent to ½ cup of fruit, ¼ cup dried fruit, 16 grapes or ½ cup fresh, frozen or canned fruit.

- 3 cups of milk each day. This daily serving is equivalent to 1 cup yogurt, 1 ½ ounces natural cheese, 2 ounces processed cheese and 1 cup milk.  

- 5 ½ ounces of protein each day. This daily serving is equivalent to ¼ cup cooked dry beans, 1 egg, ½ cup nuts, 1 ounce of poultry, meat or fish, and a tablespoon peanut butter.

Apart from considering the daily serving guidelines mentioned above, pregnant women should also take regular doses of folic acid. Folic acid helps prevent serious birth defects and spinal cord defects. Women of child-bearing age need to take at least 40 micrograms of folic acid each day before and during pregnancy. Foods that are rich sources of folic acid include enriched grain products, green leafy vegetables, orange juice, beans and vitamin-fortified breakfast cereals.
