I picked up this book because of Rodale’s reputation for excellence. However, this one’s a real disappointment. The recipes are not low-carb and the nutritional data doesn’t add up correctly for many of them. And, it’s hardly smart – since when is half a bagel a “smart” choice? Or half a cookie? And who can eat half? That’s like giving half a cigarette to a chain smoker and calling it a “smart choice”. No- pass on this one. There are so many really good choices now, that purchasing this one would not be very “smart”. I would suggest Dr. Atkins and the Drs. Eades programs, that are backed by research, clinical documentation and a great track record for success.
I don’t typically take the time to write reviews but I was actually looking for this book to replace one that I already have. I was shocked to see some of the reviews because I usually go by the reviews before I buy a product. The fact is, I use this book so often it literally fell apart! I’m no health expert, just an average female who wanted to lose a little bit of weight, but ultimately, start a healthier lifestyle. This book gave me basic information to start off with. The introduction wasn’t filled with so much jargon that I was bored to tears, but rather, it helped me to understand what my body was doing with the foods I was consuming. It was just enough information to keep me interested. As far as the food, the recipes consist of common, everyday ingredients that I already have or can easily find in the grocery store. And, most of the recipes are delicious and easy to prepare. You obviously still need to use common sense and portion control based on the results you want to achieve. The bottom line is that the recipes in this book give you a healthy and tasty alternative to the guilty recipes you already love. It’s a great start for anyone who doesn’t want to go to diet extremes.
This book happens to describe to a “t” how I ended up eating for good health. It has an excellent 7-step plan and is chock-full of information and useful tips. It is a book that doesn’t ban food groups. But, you do learn
how to eat better. And you can trust Prevention. Since following the principles laid out in the book, I feel
better, and my stomach, once very big, has really started to disappear. I no longer weigh myself, but I’m pretty sure I’ve lost some weight based on how my clothes fit (I’m an ex-carb binger).
One other tip for you readers: Try not to eat too many high-level (or any) carbs at night. And not eating after 8 pm is another tip someone suggested that really works.
This method is very safe. You won’t get bored. Try it.
I should have known that with Rodale as the publisher, this would not be a typical low carb cookbook. There is a push towards foods they consider healthy–soy, whole grains, lots of fruit. Fine, but not in my diet. If you like Prevention magazine recipes, you’ll probably like this book. I’ll put mine on eBay.
This book is a good one for new Glycemic Index readers. If you are well read on the subject at all, then skip it.
