Burden on Restaurants to Make You Skinny

Burden on Restaurants to Make You Skinny

Let’s pass a federal law that says everyone must be a certain weight, must be healthy and have all the money they need to live comfortably. Sounds Orwellian, but solves many social issues. Impossible you say, don’t be so sure.

The restaurant industry, already in an economic tailspin from escalating food costs and fewer diners, is fighting local legislation on two major fronts, with more to follow.

In San Francisco, a new ordinance was passed that says employers must pay an amount per employee hour into a health care fund. While there are formulas and eligibility requirements, the amount is about .04 per hour. This is on top of an earlier ordinance that was passed requiring employers to pay a minimum hourly wage of almost per hour, including tipped employees!

In New York, a recent ordinance requires multi-unit restaurants to post the amount of calories in each menu item. While on the surface it may seem cumbersome, but doable; look a little closer. What if the consumer decides to upsize their meal? If you advertize it, you must post it. What if one diner chooses a meal #2 with Coke and the other diner chooses meal #2 with an iced tea? That is a significant difference in calories.

Restaurants attempting to comply have found it almost impossible to meet the letter of the law. Fines are beginning to be levied for “menu items” that combine several individual items already listed with their calories, but not the total for a “meal” as a menu item. Obviously, the restaurant industry has gone to court to try to stop local enforcement.

Ultimately, who pays the costs for all these laws, ordinances and the cost to administer them? The consumer. However, the consumer doesn’t see the real costs until restaurants have been forced to absorb much of the cost until they can fold the costs into menu pricing. New menus are costly to produce and almost always after the additional expense has been paid and absorbed.

Eventually all costs get to the consumer. As the citizens of San Francisco are finding out, the costs have caused restaurants to fail, tourists to complain and eating out is even more expensive there than other cities. The well intended ordinance is taking a toll on tourism, tax revenue, jobs and previously notable bay area food fame.

In my mind there is a bigger issue here. How far can we carry regulation into our daily lives? Should schools be fined for not teaching people that a Big Mac has a lot more calories than a small salad? How many languages does the restaurant industry have to post these notices in? Maybe we should fine restaurants who serve more than 800 calories to any one person? Better yet, let’s fine anyone who eats over 2600 calories per day.

For health care ordinances, let’s also fine people who don’t go to the doctor when they might be sick. Or tax people who choose not to enroll in the health care plan offered. Oh yes, maybe we should fine those individuals who choose to spend their new found increased government mandated earnings on vacations, fancy clothes and 0 cell phones instead of enrolling in the health care programs.

The real issue is one of personal choices. Slowly it seems we are allowing government to intercede into our daily lives and the choices we make. Besides the cost for bad choices being passed along equally among everyone, it seems a little tiny piece of freedom is whittled away with each attempt to make us “better”.

Personal responsibility for our bad choices is also disappearing. Let those who do the right things and make the right choices pay for the minority who don’t. Does that sound like what our forefathers intended?

Ooops… time to get off the soap box…. I just spilled the hot coffee that I ordered. Need to sue someone!

The Healthy Eating Pyramid

The Healthy Eating Pyramid

A healthy eating pyramid is a nutrition guide developed by the Harvard school of public health. The pyramid suggests a manner of eating where ideal proportions of each food category to be taken per day are outlined. The healthy eating pyramid recommends the eating plant oils such olive oil, soybean oil and corn oil as well as the eating of vegetables in the abundance intervals of three or more times a day. The pyramid also entails 13 servings of nuts and legumes with a 1-2 servings of dairy or calcium supplement. In the pyramid there are also recommendations of the 1-2 serving of poultry and the encouragement of a sparing use of meat and butter and refined foods like white rice, white bread potatoes, pasta and sweets.

The dynamics that characterise the relationship between health and diet for the children abound. Studies have shown that in fact children in the entirety of the socio-economic levels are all susceptible to the dangers of poor nutrition for one reason or another.  The factors that characterise the link between poor diet and disease range form the fact that some children do not receive enough of each day’s food supplies to the fact that most of the children are left ungoverned on the aspect of their feeding and food purchase lifestyles and resultantly children remain malnourished. Hellmich N. (1992) adds “Many other children receive enough food supplies but they eat food stuffs which are too high in sugar, fat  and other components such as sodium which make them prone to the dangers of overweight and obesity and other chronic diseases”.

In addition to the foregoing it is worth mentioning that as the number of working parents continues to grow more and more children are left with the responsibility of feeding themselves on their shoulders and this must be expected to expose children to health dangers related to diet owing to the fact that food purchasing and eating habits of children are hardly rational. The other dimensions that have been up for keen consideration enlist the premise that there is an intricate link between children’s diet and their ability to learn. “The relationship has been realized for long enough now through anecdotal exhibit and even more recently through the evaluations of the outcomes of controlled research studies.” This has come as the reason for the further importance and reinforcement of nutritional education particularly for the children.

The thrust of nutrition education has been revolutionized to take a grass roots resemblance with some nutritional education being given to women in prenatal periods. This has been charcterised by the emphasis of way in which low weight gain during pregnancy may result in the increase of low birth weight dangers (pegged at less than 5.5 pounds) of the new born baby. This is particularly important in the consideration of the reality that low birth weight babies are more susceptible to hearing, sight and learning defects that often necessitate the solicitation or more special education services. The special Supplement Food Program for Women, Infants and children (WIC) offers food and counseling as well as nutritional education to pregnant women. The program has also extended its services to the lactating women in low-income classifications.

Can You be Too Healthy? Extremes in Healthy Eating and How to Get the Balance Right

No matter how much temptation and cajoling, we couldn’t get her to eat an Easter egg. At work, Easter is another excuse to eat chocolate and for most of us, we unfurl the Easter egg foil and easily chomp on some chocolate. But the office health nut instead munches on a carrot – about as close to the Easter bunny as they’ll get. But what if they ate too many carrots? Or too many bran muffins? They are actually damaging their body in a way they may not realise; believing advice they read or heard and perhaps taking that advice too far. Yes, it is possible to be too healthy. There is a way though to have a healthy diet – one based on knowing what is reliable advice, and knowing how to follow it.

—-What is too healthy? Why go to extremes? —-

A diet that is too healthy means eating only a limited selection of foods specifically for their purported health properties. The lady who refused the Easter egg may be one who thinks that she will live happy and healthy in a body free from ‘bad food’ – she may even snack continually on carrots for better eyesight. Obsessive behaviour is one reason why people may go to extremes in their healthy eating. Other reasons include a health scare (at risk for osteoporosis), or an excuse to overindulge (red wine and dark chocolate). Many healthy eating extremes are also triggered by the concept of health-crazing.

—What is health-crazing?—

The evidence of health-crazing can be seen on checkout conveyor belts; punnets of blueberries, cans of salmon, and boxes of green tea. ‘So what?’ you might say, ‘What is the difference between the familiar food pyramid and the blurb on a box of tea about the powers of antioxidants?’ Basically, health-crazing is when diet is focused on one food rather than a total approach to health through a balanced diet. Health-crazing isn’t necessarily bad unless it influences the fundamental balance of nutrients within the body.

—When health-crazing goes too far—

Even those of us who aren’t strict with everything in their diet may tend to favour one food. Over a period of about eight months, Suzie* ate three bran muffins each day, and a bowl of bran cereal for breakfast. Sure, she was ‘regular’ but then she was too regular, causing a rectal tear, pain and lethargy. Bran also reduces iron uptake; an explanation for her low haemoglobin level. The solution? She cut down on the bran, and increased so-called ‘stodge’ foods like fats. But what drives the craze that made Suzie fixate on bran? Or an office colleague gulp down their morning blueberry smoothie? The answer is money. Why else would someone steal an entire blueberry field in Canada after the health craze for blueberries reached fever pitch?

The recipe for the smoothie may have come from a women’s magazine, a TV show, or any number of advertisements that bombard us with the latest in food with properties to burn fat, give youth, and arouse libido. But how can you tell if this advice is even genuine?

—What is genuine advice?—

Remember our office colleague at the beginning of the article? Eventually we got her to eat the Easter egg – we used the magic words: ‘Scientists say it’s good for you’. But who are these scientists and can we believe them? There are ways to recognise whether advice used in heath-crazing is genuine.

The hallmarks of dubious advice include…

++ vague source of information – common phrases are mentioned, such as ‘scientists say’ or ‘it has been proven’. There is no reference to who the scientists are, and whether they are from public or private enterprise.

++the entertainment angle – current affairs shows are notorious for their thinly researched stories of magic water and fat loss foods as they know that these topics have sure-fire ratings.

++ marketing angle/money to be made. For example, advertorials about the benefits of high calcium intake from a company that just happens to sell calcium enriched milk.

Genuine advice is…

++ sourced from a thorough study – peer reviewed, trialled and the product/thoery is used over a period of time.

++ endorsed – if a government body also endorses scientific findings then this adds credibility to the discovery. But be wary of endorsement that sounds important but is really just a front for commercial organisations eg the ‘Tobacco Information Service’ run by the Tobacco Merchants Association.

++ able to be researched for yourself – look for a source, such as in a medical journal. Then go and read the full article. Look for how the study was conducted, how many participants, what was the error margin, etc.

Does all this reading and double-checking sound like a lot of effort? Who do we believe? Thankfully there is an answer to a truly healthy diet and it doesn’t involve hard work or sacrifice; it’s about getting the balance right.

The Recommended Daily Intake - RDI – is a proven scientific analysis of all the nutrients the body needs to function at optimal level. Each macronutrient (eg carbohydrate), vitamin (eg Vitamin C) and mineral (Eg Calcium) has a measurement that the body must intake each day, ranging from micrograms to grams. But how do you know if you’re meeting this level, or exceeding it?

Read the labels on the packaging, for example, a slice of typical wholemeal and grain bread has 7% of the RDI for iron. Be aware of which nutrients have an upper limit that must not be exceeded or else adverse health effects may arise. For example, any more than five carrots a day (Vitamin A Carotene) will cause skin to tinge orange. Fat soluble Vitamin A Retinol found in liver and fortified milk, in the short term can cause headaches and vomiting and in the longer term, hair loss and liver damage if consumed in greater quantities than 3000 milligrams a day, which is approx three times the RDI usually caused by exceeding dosages in vitamin supplements.

Being too healthy can be harmful to your health unless you follow genuine advice within scope of the RDI. The key to a truly healthy diet is balance; never ever eat too much of one thing, and allow some indulgences like Easter eggs. After all, the Easter bunny eats carrots, but he eats chocolate too.
